Raphaëlle Boutié / Paris

What are your themes and resources?

I was born in the french country side close to La Sainte-Victoire and she was in front of me from my childhood till ever!
Nature, trees, mineral, wind, all sensations of outside.

Do you prefer a certain color? Why yes / why not?

Blue, because it’s everywhere, even in the grey sky. It is a company coming everyday when I wake up.

Techniques: stolen, learned, ignored? How important is it today to master them?

Learned first with the fathers, then make our own ones.

Is there a recurring element / symbol / theme in your work?

Oh yes, la montagne Sainte-Victoire with mediterrannean symbols of cypress, le Mistral, pins parasols and blooming almond trees.

Nature or culture?

Nature!

Where did you isolate yourself?

In a small barn. (Paris)

How much does your art depend on the location / space you work in?

The bigger the place is, the bigger will be the canvases. Now, very small. Work is not complaining about the small space, it is adapting. Never stops.

Name something indispensable for you in the context of social distancing? What do you miss most?

Outside, nature, smelling fresh air with the smell of cut grass!

What are you working on right now? Is this work part of a series or is it completely unrelated to what you’ve been working on before?

I am going back to some exercises, classical still lives, copying Cézanne on small papers, then turning them into my own. Kind of work I do on a regular base, not to be lost in any kind of system!

How do you see the relationship between intention, planning, execution and the final product?

Always playing with what I have in mind, a universe, and what the arm is doing! A game or a struggle, it depends.

How do you motivate yourself to do in moments of no “inspiration”?

Faire mes gammes, by drawing skulls, models and still lives, with a simple pencil, and naturally, energy and breathe which is the real inspiration come back.

Give us 3 artists that you like, motivate and make you work hard.

Cézanne, Bazaine, Helen Frankenthaler.

Are there things you don't want to reveal about your art? We accept a hint.

Sometimes an anguish… coming at night. Will I be able to continue painting?

How do you relate to the international artistic context?

Magazines, Instagram! And my friends from Romania!

How does your work reach the "world" during this period?

My work is hidden.

Do you believe this situation will have an impact on artistic creation?

Oh yes, new will appear, from the inside of each artist.
